clientes. En un último esfuerzo, sus dueños ofrecieron
servicios económicos. Eran retornos fingidos, vueltas
sin ida, reencuentros sin ausencia. El interesado podía
simular un viaje al África. La empresa se encargaba del
recibimiento, los abrazos y las lágrimas. El éxito fue nu-
lo. Por esos días, Manuel Mandeb escribió su oscuro en-
sayo Nunca se vuelve. Leamos algunos párrafos:
“No es posible regresar a ninguna parte. Los puntos
de partida no se quedan quietos y a la vuelta ya no están.
Para poder volver se necesita, por empezar, un punto de
partida eterno e inmutable. Pero todo se mueve y no hay
forma de detener el universo. Créanme si les digo que
nadie ha efectuado nunca jamás un verdadero regreso.
El hombre que lo consiga cumplirá la hazaña más gran-
de de la historia”.
La idea de no bañarse dos veces en el mismo río no
constituye ninguna novedad filosófica. Pero adviértase
que Mandeb deseaba en verdad volver a bañarse. Ésa fue
su mayor obsesión y siempre lamentó amargamente no
poder remontar los tiempos.

The agency Todo para el Regreso went bankrupt due to a lack of clients. In a last effort, its owners offered budget services. They were fake returns, round trips without departures, reunions without absences. The client could pretend to take a trip to Africa. The company took care of the welcome, the hugs, and the tears. The success was nil. Around that time, Manuel Mandeb wrote his dark essay Nunca se vuelve (One Never Returns). Let’s read a few paragraphs:
“It is impossible to return anywhere. Points of departure do not stay still, and when you come back, they are no longer there. To be able to return, one would need, to begin with, an eternal and unchanging point of departure. But everything moves, and there is no way to stop the universe. Believe me when I tell you that no one has ever truly made a real return. The man who achieves it will accomplish the greatest feat in history.”
The idea of not bathing twice in the same river is no philosophical novelty. But note that Mandeb truly desired to bathe again. That was his greatest obsession, and he always bitterly regretted not being able to turn back time.
